What is Claude Duet? A plain look at the new AI helper that comes to you first
Most AI tools wait for you to type a question. Claude Duet works the other way. It is a new app from Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI tool. You connect apps like your email and calendar. Then Duet looks through them and tells you what needs your attention. Anthropic opened it to its first testers on October 23, 2026. [1]
This page explains what it is, who can use it today, and what to think about before you connect anything. We do not sell this app, and no one paid us to write about it.
What it does
- A morning brief. Each morning it looks across your email and calendar. It sends a short note about what matters most that day. [2]
- One ongoing chat. You type or speak to it like you would text a person. You can dump a messy to-do list on it, and it splits the list into tasks. [2]
- Work in the background. It keeps working after you close the app. It lets you know when a task is done or needs you. [1]
- Drafts, not sends. Anthropic says it shows you what it plans to do and waits for your OK before it sends a message, pays for something, signs a document or deletes anything. [1][2]
Who can get it right now
It is an early test, which Anthropic calls a research preview. To use it today you need all three of these: [2]
- A paid Claude Pro or Max plan.
- A Claude account in the United States.
- An invite from the waitlist. Invites go out in waves.
It is not on Claude's Team or Enterprise plans yet. It does not work with Microsoft 365 yet, so offices on Outlook will have to wait. [2]
What it cannot do yet
Anthropic lists some limits for this early version: [2]
- It checks your accounts every few hours, not every minute. Something urgent can slip in between checks.
- It can misread an email thread or guess wrong about what is urgent.
- It does not make phone calls or send text messages to other people.
- You cannot watch it use its web browser or take over.
- Some things are off-limits even with your OK, like trading stocks or moving money between bank accounts.
Safety and privacy: what to know
A helper that reads your inbox also reads what other people trust you with. Anthropic has written a full page on how Duet handles this. [3] Here are the main points, in plain words.
- Passwords. Anthropic says the AI never sees your passwords. When a website asks for one, you type it into a separate form. A real password request will only show up inside the Claude app or on claude.ai during a sign-in you started. Treat any other request as a scam. [3]
- Private details. A separate check looks at each message before it goes out. It is built to block card numbers, bank numbers and ID numbers. Health and money details go out only if you clearly ask. Anthropic says this check will sometimes miss things. [3]
- Memory. Duet remembers past work until you delete your history or reset its memory. If you disconnect an app, it stops reading that app, but it still remembers what it already saw. [2]
- Training. Pro and Max are personal plans. Check your Claude privacy settings to decide whether your chats can be used to improve future AI models. [4]
Questions to ask before you connect anything
- Which inbox will it read? Is there anything in that inbox it should never see, like prayer requests, counseling notes, donor records or customer card numbers?
- Could you use a shared office inbox instead of a personal one?
- Who will read and approve each draft before it goes out?
- Is anything covered by health privacy rules? If so, this early version is not the right tool.

Two ways a small office could use it
These how-to pages work with Duet or with other AI helpers that can read your email and calendar:
- For a small business: Getting a short morning list of what needs you today
- For a church office: Turning a church office brain dump into a sorted task list

Where we heard about it
We first heard about Duet from a video review by Alex Finn. [5] His video shows his own early test, mostly for software work. We checked the facts on this page against Anthropic's own pages. Where his video and Anthropic's pages differ, we went with Anthropic.
